2010 Nigeria Fact Sheet
International Youth Camp Staff
Nigeria - August 2010
Nature of Project: Staff instructors for youth camp program. Activities will include volleyball, soccer, rock climbing, computer appreciation and crafts.
Goals of Youth Corps Involvement: The United Youth Corps is designed to help motivated young adults connect with the work of the Church through service. All participants should understand that their involvement in this project should lead them 1) to understand the vision of and need for the Kingdom of God, 2) to experience and live the vision of the Kingdom, 3) to identify with and participate in the “Work of the Church” and 4) to understand that by such participation, they will have become a part of something bigger than themselves. All Youth Corps participants will take part in pretrip teleconferences and postproject discussions of these outcomes.
Dates of Project: Total travel will be from approximately Aug. 10-26.
Number of Youth Corps Participants Needed: Up to two.
Participant Prerequisites:
- Minimum of 18 years of age.

- The applicant’s pastor’s recommendation.
Lodging: Lodging and meals will be provided by the United Church of God in Lagos and at the camp site.
Environment and Expectations: A semirural setting with minimal amenities. Working in the developing world presents special rewards and challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the youth of the Church in Nigeria. At the same time, due to lesser development of the sanitation and health-care infrastructures, special care must be taken to avoid illness. Vigilance in matters of food and liquid intake is critical. Participants should be prepared for the sometimes Spartan cultural conditions, but they will have the opportunity for great personal growth and accomplishment.
Travel Dates: Participants will book travel as a group for departure on approximately Aug. 10 and return approximately two weeks later. Exact departure date is yet to be determined.
Estimated Cost to Youth Corps Participants: Airfare to Lagos, Nigeria ($2,000 minus $850 Scholarship = $1150), Nigeria visa ($200), antimalarial medication and yellow fever card ($200), travel health insurance ($40) and pocket money ($250). While we believe these costs are accurate, all participants should be prepared for costs being slightly higher.
Total cost per United Youth Corps volunteer = approximately $1,840
Deadline for Application: Jan. 15, 2010
