2010 Zambia Fact Sheet
Zambia Member Education Project
Lusaka, Zambia - July/August 2010
Nature of Project: Participants will assist as staff in conducting a series of basic classes on the fundamentals of computer use to assist the members in becoming conversant in PC use and use of e-mail and the Internet. In addition, classes will also be conducted in basic conversation English for the members and youth in Zambia. Experience in teaching computer use is required for one participant; training in ESL—or willingness to enroll and pay for online ESL teacher training (approx. $300)—is required for the second participant.Youth Corps volunteers will assist in one of these two education projects.
Goals of Youth Corps Involvement: The United Youth Corps is designed to help motivated and desirous young adults connect with the work of the Church through service. This dimension of leadership will be awakened and directed toward the vision of the coming kingdom of God in which Christians will be helping rebuild the waste places of the earth and assisting God in serving humanity. To that end, all participants should understand that their involvement in this project should lead them 1) to understand the vision of and need for the Kingdom of God, 2) to experience and live the vision of the Kingdom, 3) to identify with and participate in the “Work of the Church” and 4) to understand that by such participation they will have become a part of something bigger than themselves. All Youth Corps participants will take part in pretrip teleconferences and postproject discussion of these outcomes.

Environment: Working in the developing world presents special rewards and challenges. It offers the chance to make a positive difference in people’s lives in a much more dramatic way than in Western nations. Participants will have the opportunity to represent their individual countries as well as the Church, and in a limited way help advance the cause of unity in God’s Church coupled with international cooperation. While the comfort and safety of the UYCorps volunteers is paramount in our planning; nonetheless, participants should be prepared for Spartan living conditions and the chance for great personal growth in meeting these challenges.
Travel Dates: Participants will book air travel as a group and likely depart in late July and return in early August (total time approximately two weeks).
Estimated Cost to Youth Corps Participants: Airfare to Lusaka, Zambia ($2,500 minus $850 UYC Scholarship = $1,650), malaria medication ($100), travel health insurance ($40), Visa ($100) and pocket money ($150). While we believe these costs are accurate, all participants should be prepared for costs being slightly higher.
Total estimated cost per UYCorps volunteer = approximately $2,050
